Exploring the Monitor

The site of a famous sunken Civil War ship off the coast of North Carolina is the first stop on the NR-1's research mission.

A 24 hour survey of the USS Monitor is planned to accomplish an operational check of the NR-1's sensors before it heads to the Gulf of Mexico for deep water surveys.

For 111 years, the USS Monitor rested, undetected, on the seafloor off the coast of North Carolina. Electronic technology that could detect the shipwreck was not invented until after World War II.

In 1973, divers discovered the sunken ship using magnetic and acoustic equipment and closed-circuit television cameras.

The ship, located in 230 feet of water 16 miles off Cape Hatteras, North Carolina, has been designated as a National Marine Sanctuary. Access to the Monitor is granted by NOAA.
