The featured cruise is a cooperative venture by government, academia, and industry that accomplishes basic and applied marine research in the Gulf of Mexico -- particularly the deeper Gulf -- and fosters public awareness of the marine environment -- particularly at the high school level.

To find out more about the submarine itself, the scientists' goals, the underwater study sites and who's funding this project, use the menu on your right or the yellow and black arrow at the top of the screen.

Cruise and sub details
In addition to the NR-1 submarine, we're using top-notch instrumentation, data processing and navigation equipment to assist in laser imaging and sonic profiling.

Project goals
Scientists on this NR-1 cruise aim to gather data for: ecology of oil seeps and hydrate systems, ecology of reef systems, and total resource evaluation.

Study sites in the gulf
Our tour stops at the Gulf of Mexico's hydrocarbon seeps and possibly the USS Monitor off the coast of North Carolina.

Cooperating institutions
The cruise wouldn't be possible without the help of funds from government, academia, non-profit organizations and industry.

Program support
A quick list of our equipment, funds and activities -- both in-hand and sought.
