Reefs of the Gulf offers super science, stellar photos and challenging questions packaged into learning units perfect for the classroom.

A timely mission for scientists, managers, and educators is promoting awareness of Gulf of Mexico -- particularly awareness of deep-water resources in the Gulf.

The Gulf is the longest coast in the U.S. and arguably the richest in terms of commercial enterprises like fishing, transportation, and energy production.

As the results of NR-1's grand tour will demonstrate, the Gulf also contains many natural wonders. Increasingly, the search for energy resources is extending into deeper waters -- of the Gulf and elsewhere. The human presence in the deep ocean can be profitable and harmonious, but only at the cost of greater understanding of how the deep-sea ecosystem works.

The Year of the Ocean provides an important background for this cruise. Promoting publication, especially at the high-school level is a major goal of the cruise.
