Reefs of the Gulf Cruise Ends, For Now

The loss of the use of the NR-1's bow thrusters means the Reefs of the Gulf research cruise had to be postponed. The scientists are back home and the NR-1 is on its way to its home port in Connecticut for repairs.

However, as stated in the May 22, 1998 Cruise Journal, the scientists plan to return to the site as soon as possible to find out more about the newly discovered community of tube worms and other chemosynthetic animals.

If you sign up now, you will be added to our Gulf Tour e-mailing list, so you will receive e-mail when the web site is modified. You will still be able to access the educational units on the Reefs of the Gulf site, even though the cruise has ended.

Thanks for joining Gulf Tour. If you have questions, please don't hesitate to e-mail us.

Excerpt from the Cruise Journal:

"We were sad because things hadn't worked out nearly as well as we'd hoped they would, but excited by what we had been able to accomplish and by the prospects of trying again. Some of us (Ian MacDonald, Alice Pechahchy, and Mike Peccini) will be back a month from now, diving with the smaller ubmersible Johnson SEA LINK. Hopefully, it won't be too long until we can have NR-1 back in the Gulf once more."
