Submarine NR-1 arrived in Port Canaveral, FL on the 8th May, under tow from SSV CAROLYN CHOUEST.

This is NR-1's normal mode of transport when traveling long distances. The tow is provided by a huge hawser played out from winches on Carolyn's back deck. NR-1's crew makes the long trip inside the submarine, staying very busy with training drills and system maintenance.

The port call is when the science party gets on board and makes final installation of the survey instruments. It turned out that the trip from Groton was hard on our equipment.

Divers went over the side on Saturday morning and reported damage to one of the cables that powers the X-Star subbottom profiler. It must have worked loose and chafed against the hull, wearing away the insulation and exposing bare wire to the water. Divers made another trip over the side on Sunday morning to replace the repaired X-Star cable. Testing continued on the Laser system. Meanwhile, stubborn problem with a telemetry card on the LS4042 laser line scanner slowed start-up testing of this vital instrument.

Current plans call for CAROLYN to tow NR-1 out of Port Canaveral on Tuesday morning.
